Steve Martin liked to give the advice, “Be so good they can’t ignore you.”
This advice applies perfectly to your business.
The question we usually ask is “How?”. Afterall, if everyone knew how to be so good they can’t ignore you, wouldn’t they all be doing it? The short answer is “NO”.
Sometimes we ask how because we like to pretend we don’t know.
Not knowing absolves us of responsibility. But what if we know and we just aren’t doing it?
It is the doing, the implementation of what you know, that will set you apart.
Our health is a great example. It is common knowledge that eating healthy and moving our bodies leads to better health. Yet look around. How many people are eating unprocessed foods and doing some form of exercise regularly? Those who do are the ones who reap the rewards.
Here’s a business example.
Susan Frew of Sunshine Home Services gave a presentation at the PHCC Foundation in 2016 that laid out exactly how she took her business from $177k to $1.8M in 4 years. She did it by completely rethinking the customer experience from the perspective of Sunshine’s target customer. She shared Sunshine’s “12 Points of Love” laying out the roadmap for other home services businesses to do what she did. I challenge you to watch her presentation on YouTube and then identify any home services company that does half of what she shared.
Even when we know, we still don’t do.
So how do we successfully implement what we know to get better results?
One great way to be better about doing is to get an Accountabilibuddy who helps you stay on track.
People hire a personal trainer to help them work out. They buy a meal service to pick out their food. Sherpas help us climb mountains.
Sometimes we need a peer who’s travelling the same path to hold us accountable.
Sometimes we need a little more help seeing around corners and avoiding pitfalls. So instead of someone on the same journey we can engage a guide who’s been down the path before, someone who has studied the subject, and who has a bit more expertise and experience than we do.
Sharing your goals and plans with someone and working together to achieve those goals and implement those plans increases your chances of success and progress exponentially.
So, get yourself an Accountabilibuddy or hire someone with more experience and expertise to help you. Share your goals and your plans to get there.
Implementation, doing, is the key to being so good they can’t ignore you.
